BARF (Biologically Approved Raw Food) DIET
No Onions, grapes or raisins
Use Plastic, Glass or Ceramic bowls only. Any homeopathics are killed by metal. Use plastic spoons for mixing Tegor BIO 92 & 93 into food. It's a good idea to get away from metal period on BARF
BARF shld be 1/2 raw meat and 1/2 veggies/fruit. As they improve in all health respects, they can have as little as 10% fruit/veggie mix (increasing the meat proportionately to 90% but most dogs are fine on 50/50)
Meals go by weight of dog. The amount fed is generally 2% of body weight per day, divided into two meals. If they weigh 75 lbs they get .75 (3/4) lb per meal @ two meals per day. A 100 lb dogs gets 1 lb/meal @ 2 times per day.
Do not mix melons or citrus with the meat mix it rots in their stomach give melons & citrus separate on the side, as treats if you like. Citrus is not necessary but if you're eating an orange & he wants a piece, it’s ok.
Fruit & veggies shld be very ripe to just over ripe get if off the marked down stands in the supermarket if you can, it’s less expensive too. You can get a lot of organic products from there.
All organic meat, fruit, veggies, is ideal but can be costly and honestly this diet even with non-organic products is 1000 times better than any commercial dog food. Most people doing organic think that non- organic is filled with steroids and antibiotics. I believe the meat packers are getting away from that as people become aware of the health hazards. The food we sell and you buy is made for humans.
Use ‘in season’ stuff, it’s less expensive. Pineapple, either canned or fresh has digestive enzymes, pumpkin, papaya & Mangos too canned is fine. Just check to make sure no sugar is added. I always use pineapple as one of the fruits.
Veggies balance should be 2 above ground and two below ground growing veggies and 2 fruits. Add garlic, ginger pieces and a can of sardines or tuna or salmon & 2 eggs to each mix
Grind them up in food processor peels (eggplant, beets not thick ones like bananas), pits (apples) common sense please), the whole shebang (obviously not peach or large pits in the mix)
Meat you can get chicken quite inexpensively from any butcher (so you get human grade). Tell them you want ground chicken necks and backs (there is also organ meat attached which they need). For convenience you can get boxes in 50lb frozen blocks each block is approx 1lb. You can also buy 50 lb boxes of fresh ground chicken necks and backs and package it yourself in zip locks and freeze it for size according to your dog.
Defrost the meat before you give it to them please.
Mix fruit/veggies together with the meat really well till they’re used to the fruit/veg part or they’ll just pick out the meat. You can add a splash of hot water to it to mix it easier & to warm it up if the cold food upsets their stomachs.
Raw Chicken parts give them whole chicken neck, back, wings, whatever, as is, once per week as their meal. Big dogs, over 100 lbs can eat a whole 1 lb chicken if they want.
I have Saturday as their all meat day and they get whole, raw chicken parts instead of the ground stuff. The bones are an important part of the diet.
If they are getting fat cut back meat. It’s a little trial & error to get the right balance.
Supplements: Udo’s Pet Essentials for dogs 1 tsp tbsp (again, size of dog) 5 times per week we add it Mon Fri., breakfast only, easy to remember. If you forget sometimes, its no big deal we add some to our veggie mix for you anyway, do it next meal.
Tegor bio 92 & 93 both meals, 10 drops till the bottles are gone. This is a digestive enzyme and Immune booster/lymph system cleaner and helps absorption.
Acidophilus (the good bacteria in yogurt) at least 4 billion cells/cap kind. One each meal.
Offal/organ meat. They have this in the ground chicken and you can see chunks of it on the whole pieces. They don't need a lot of this. The dehydrated organ meat we sell is also a good source.
They shld also have a fasting day. The body uses a lot of energy in digestion so it isn’t healing itself (the whole point of this diet is that they absorb all the nutrients, it’s easier to digest so the body heals itself faster, better) so a fast day means the body spends its time exclusively on healing. We know about soft brown pleading eyes. Go play with them outside, or just stay out of the kitchen. ;-)
They actually only miss one meal. (We feed Sunday morning, skip Sunday night and then feed Monday morning)
Also very important is for them to get raw beef bones (soup bones) RAW NOT COOKED. These are their toothbrushes. Also the marrow provides a lot of essential fatty acids. I give mine 1 per week. Skinny dogs or pups up to 18 mos as their filling out can have 2-3. While marrow has EFAs it also has A LOT of fat so your average dog get ONE. You can toss them back in the fridge when they're done with it and give it to them over & over for a week. It's the bone that's the toothbrush and trust me, they'll still play with it if it's empty. DO NOT poke out the marrow for them. If they don't get it all, no loss. They're getting some every single week from this source. Don't forget there is marrow in the ground and whole chicken.
Eggs one or two per week, raw. They can eat the shells too. Either let them have it outside (they'll carry it around and eat it on your bed or couch if you let them).
Fish any canned or fish on sale is fine. We use a lot of sardines, mackerel, and salmon. Tuna is fine. Canned is more than fine just avoid veggie oil in the cans. Either tomato sauce or water. Try to make sure salt is the last or not an ingredient at all.
Garlic & Ginger root garlic about 1 clove per food processor mix, ginger a chunk. This stuff is great for them and necessary.
Cranberries someone asked about those as anti fungal - it is but they're sour as all get out. one or two in an entire large freezer bag is more than enuf. It's easier to just pour cranberry juice or increase acidophilus.
On this diet you will notice a better coat in 4 days and whiter teeth within two weeks.
The fussiest eaters will go berserk for this diet.
Floppy Eared dog syndrome, itchy shin with no rash and green glop in the eyes dogs with these problems shldn’t have root veggies in their diet. It causes a ph imbalance. Eliminating root veggies shld eliminate the problem. If not, there’s an herb supplement from Healthy Paws you can get direct from the mfgr or from most pet stores.
What no one tells you about BARF?
If your dog suffers from allergies, immune problems, skin problems or funguses including skin or ears, hot spots etc, these problems CAN and likely will get worse before they get better BUT you’ll notice a big difference in the problems. There is little or no redness in skin irritations, no green or thickness in mucus discharges and all of it can be treated homeopathically. It is caused by the immune system kicking into gear. Even if the problems look severe, don’t panic. We've seen it all. For almost everything that pops up when you're first on BARF, INCREASE acidophilus to 16 billion cells both meals. Add 2,000 mg VIT C morning meal and another 1000 evening meal. You'll see a difference by the 2nd meal. For Ears and Hot Spots, add one Oregano oil (or Oregano Oil with Grapefruit seed extract) to the morning meal.
You’re not alone in trying to keep your dog as healthy as possible. We’ll help you or refer you to anyone you need. You can rush to the vet or give this a chance.
Wellness does not preclude veterinary medicine but holistic and homeopathic were science long before science came along.
That’s the extent of the drawbacks I’ve discovered in my 4 dogs and all the clients I’ve changed over to BARF. Nothing that can’t be dealt with easily. Also the majority of holistic and homeopathic are not ‘forever’ additions or costs. Depending on the problem, they can be on various things for over a year but it ALL goes away and the cost of this diet is approx 50% of the cost of the most expensive commercial food, not to mention the savings n future veterinarian bills for repeat hot spots, funguses, etc. Dogs on this diet are also FLEA resistant within 2 yrs (depending when they start the diet and problems they already suffer) so you won't be paying for the flea part of the yearly heartworm prevention. Also arthritis, while not reversed, will not progress as quickly.
The Raw diet you buy in pet stores, while balanced is also super expensive.
If you have time, I can tell you where to buy the raw chicken (ground & whole pieces) but you have to take 44lbs of it and package it yourself. Fruit & veggies have to go thru a food processor but you can do it once a month or two, freeze a pile and save tons of money. If you don't have that kind of time, we sell it all, and we're less expensive than the pet stores. What we sell is the exact same stuff I feed to my dogs. Also our fruit veggie mixes come with pineapple, some pet essentials, 3,6,9 Oil AND FISH. Worth it to see your dog healthy, happy and illness free.
Camp LotsaDogs is mfg of BARF diet and we're doing it in a way that helps you maintain control of your dogs diet and costs.
It’s called Camp LotsaDogs' LotsaGoodStuff.
We're also selling dehydrated organ meat and raw bones.
